WHY YOU SHOULD START BUILDING A CAREER PATH FROM NOW

Without an iota of doubt, I can confidently say that majority of us reading this post were part of the numerous people who buoyantly nurtured the big dream of becoming either a professional or career path in one of the renowned fields.  In the likes of Engineering, Medicine, law, Accounting, Banking and so on while young especially during our high school days.

Fast forward to a few years later; I can again confidently say that only a few or just a meager part of us who naively stated those big dreams are currently on a path that might lead us to become one of the aforementioned professionals.

So, what happened to these big dreams; is it that we don’t believe in that dream anymore? Is it that we have found solace in another soothing field? Or it is that we have just succumbed to God’s will?

I know many would want to respond to these questions. But not to worry, the answers are glaring and begging to be seen.

Almost everyone has some sort of significant goal or aspiration they hope to achieve in future. For a significant number of people, this includes some long-term career plan or dream job. While for some it might be owning or creating a landmark innovation. But as we all know; the future is a voyage with ripples of both constructive and destructive wave. Hence, it calls for prior preparations and well-outlined structures so as to have a successful and goal-driven sail.

I believe many of us are very conversant with the saying; “A stitch in time saves nine”. Likewise the equally popular adage; “make hay while the sun shine”. Building a career path early enough would in a long way make actualization of one’s career goals more easy and feasible.

Great and truly satisfying careers don’t happen by accident. It is a combination of talent, hard work, a bit of luck, and a strategy carefully managed and put to work. When you have a career path structure early on, you get to start your race with an advantage. You don’t have to be the fastest, but you need to be strategic. A career path structure allows you to confidently navigate through critical choices such as “what”, “how”, “why” and “when”.

As frequently as our wants and needs change, the tasks we must accomplish in order to achieve them change just as fast. So, having a career path structure can help you design your future the way you would like it. It could as well be flexible enough to allow you inject more or different personal ambitions and goals.

More generally, having a career path structure will help your personal development in the following ways:

  • YOU WOULD BE SELF-CONFIDENT AND MOTIVATED

When you have a well-defined career path structure, you tend to approach things confidently and motivated.

Having a career path is like a catalyst which drives you to take on challenges as you would see them as means of building your skill base.

An earlier planned career path again would give you extra confidence. As you grow in acquisition of the necessary skills and experience in your desired career field. It motivates you to learn with more commitment for you would want to accomplish the set targets as outlined in your plan.

Following a career path as you grow would make you more knowledgeable and aware in your desired field. This makes you confident of yourself and would always motivate you to take charge in needing situations.

  • YOU WILL HAVE A  BROADER  SKILL  BASE

A career path helps you to easily identify and learn the skills necessary to make you more attractive to a wider range of employers in your preferred field.

This structure contributes to deciding on additional courses or trainings you should undergo; that would improve your skill base as your career goals pan out.

It makes you more guided and sure about the requisite and necessary skills you need to add to your portfolio. As such, allowing you to have clearer knowledge when the need to prioritize some trainings arises. Thus, guides you to choose the right training at the right time.

  • YOU WILL GROW  YOUR  NETWORK  EARLY

There is no question that having a professional network is useful for career success. To have it early on while building your professional career would even be more appropriate and effective.

When you have a structured career path early on, it helps you to identify the potential network you need to maintain.

Your set goals and aspirations are to a very large extent dependent on the network of people you create. When you start early enough; you would easily create a network of needed personnel and bodies that would make actualization of your future ambitions easier.

As we all know, the major reason why we seek knowledge is basically to be distinguishable and relevant in whatever field we find ourselves.

Planning your career early is one of the most important tools you need so as to achieve this feat. With your skill base being continually improved according to your career plan structure; your competitiveness and relevance also increase.

An earlier planned career path affords you a pedestal to achieving new heights more easily because of your guided learning process. You would have identified and learnt skills that would make you edge out others when applying for positions and opportunities.

  • YOU WILL BUILD SELF-DISCIPLINE AND BE MORE PRODUCTIVE

Many of us reading this post are victims of procrastination and lack of self-discipline. This very critical phenomenon contribute greatly to our productivity.

When you have a career path early on that you follow judiciously, you tend to build the art of self-discipline and awareness.

A career path gives you guidance and direction. It coordinates you and compels you to execute your set goals. And by doing this, you would be more self-disciplined and in turn, you would increase your productivity.

To conclude, I hope this little piece will serve as an eye-opener to motivate us to start planning for the future from now.

Always remember; if you dream to build a blistering career, it starts from now. Thank you.

Love, Sekinat Sanni.
