GUEST POST: 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE STARTING A BLOG

Hello SEKSAN lovelies, I hope your week has been productive so far.

So today’s post is from the brilliant and intelligent Barakah of Barakahs Thoughts (popularly known as Bkaystots). She is very passionate about learning as a whole and personal development is something she encourages everybody to emulate. Hopefully, you learn from this post.

As bloggers, we all have different blogging experiences but the one thing we have in common is that getting into blogging we all realize that it isn’t as easy as it seems. I mean it’s really easy to start a blog however it is a lot more difficult than people think.

But the more you learn about it before you start, the more you know what is ahead of you, the better prepared you are and the more successful you can be as well.

Asking yourself certain questions will help you decide whether or not to start a blog.

So here are few questions you might want to ask yourself:

Do I want to make this a full-time or just a part time thing?

This is you being realistic. You can’t have most of your Income come from blogging if you only put in an hour of work. To avoid disappointing yourself at the end of the day, You have to determine the amount of time you have and what you want out of it, This will definitely help you plan better.

Am I patient enough?

Be it that you want to be full time or part time blogger, Blogging requires patience. It takes a while to get the flow of things.

Let’s not even begin to talk about the Income aspect, which can take forever sometimes.

In sink with the first question, to avoid being discouraged or frustrated it is important to determine if you are a part time or a full time blogger because you will understand that because you are a part time blogger, the income might be slow and vice versa.

What will my blog be about?

To be really honest, a lot of people find themselves more when they are already into blogging. You might start up with travel articles or food related articles, only for you to discover later on that you feel more fulfilled blogging about sports.

However, this question is important because it helps you get prepared.

It helps you create content for at least a couple of months before your discovery process begin.

I personally didn’t have to change anything, Things I started with are things I am still blogging about, but did I add a thing or two along the line? Yes!

I mean at the end of the day, that’s what content creating is all about.

The most Important thing is to make sure that you blog about things that you are passionate about because only then can content creating be super easy.

  • What will make my blog different?

Believe it or not there are a lot of blogs out there. Going into blogging without figuring out a strength to capitalize on can be really frustrating. I mean there are a lot of food bloggers out there, what more are you then bringing to the table that will make your audience look forward to your blog posts?

Who is my Target audience?

As a new blogger you are probably thinking you will just write anything you feel like writing but honestly, if you want to appeal to a larger audience, you have to be able to think of what people might want to read.

What I personally do is to try to write on what I really enjoy but at the same time can help a lot of people. Honestly, as a new blogger, the easiest way to know your target audience is to do a marketing research.

Visit other blogs in the same niche and try to see why people always look forward to their write ups.

This is not for you to be a copy cat ooo, just make some analysis and you are good to go.

How do I go about preparing?

They are loads of articles online that can help but sometimes you might get even more confused reading them. I personally attended a couple of webinars related to blogging, watched a couple of Youtube videos and whenever I had questions I was never shy to ask those that could help. Reading did help but you have to try not to consume everything at a time. It’s important that you take things slowly and preparing is a lot easier now as we now have bloggers community like The blogger point (TBP) and The blogger’s advocates that can guide you.

Having said all of these, experience is the best teacher. Ask people who have been into blogging for years now, they will tell you they are still learning a thing or two.

You can’t know it all at the beginning, however, it is important that you know and understand the basics.

That’s it, guys. Wishing you a successful blog launch. Thank you Sekinah for having me…

Thanks a lot Barakah for sharing this with us.

Blogging to earn money is not something I see myself doing anytime soon, would love to yeah but my lack of consistency and input/ideas is pretty much the main ish and so I just blog for fun/ passion and also probably preparing myself for when I am actually ready to get things pretty serious. Blogging also requires confidence in what you are writing and putting out there. These are good tips MashaAllah. Hope to get there someday InshaAllah

Funny enough, I started blogging out of passion as well. But now, I can say that the faster you make the decision of being serious about blogging, the better.

Blogging itself takes time and the consistency part is extremely essential even if it’s passion related.
Put out as much valuable contents as possible.
This will prepare your Blog for the exposure it needs to be distinct as time goes on.

MashaAllah, Jazakhumullahi Khairan. I will try and keep up with that InshaAllah. Thanks for the advice. The sky is the limit, will keep trying 🙂 but my question is do i have to make my blog a .com, or .ng i.e an actual website before I can make money of it? thanks

        • Reply Barakah July 6, 2017 at 11:39 am

Salam Ruvaida. Honestly, If you start blogging for money, you will only get frustrated. What you should be focused on doing at the moment is content creating which doesn’t happen over night. To get the money you need to have something to show for it, which is your content. BUILD YOUR BLOG. It’s good to start with WordPress or blogspot because it’s like a drawing book where you can learn, draw and erase. But the thing with not having your own domain is that you are a bit restricted and people tend to look down on WordPress.com or blogspot.com. You can always build your social media followers though and get money via that hence linking it your blog but to work with major brands and to make you look more official, you will need a .com .co e.t.c. I hope that helps.
